Young Social Innovators

Recently, nine Transition Year students from St. Brigid's Killarney travelled to Castletroy Hotel in Limerick for the "Speak Out" regional event as part of their Young Social Innovators project. The Speak Out allows YSI teams to present their ideas to an audience. The girls did their project on bike safety and wanted to raise awareness about the importance of making sure you wear the correct gear, like helmets and high-vis jackets, when out cycling.

Since beginning their project in November, the girls have raised almost €600 for the Ian O' Connell Fund, did a survey on first year students on bike safety, raised awareness through their social media and bought in a guest speaker to talk to students about how to stay safe when cycling. For their Speak Out performance they wrote a cover of the song 'Riptide' which gave safety tips for cycling. They played the ukulele and cahone while they sang. It went very well, and everyone clapped along. They enjoyed the day and they got the opportunity to see some of the other innovative projects that other schools had come up with. They also got to meet Dayl Cronin, who was in Dancing with the Stars last year, as he was hosting the event. Well done to all involved.
