Kerry School Girls' Soccer Skills and Blitz

The inaugural Kerry School Girls Soccer Skills and Blitz in association with Bank of Ireland and the FAI took place at Killarney Celtic last Tuesday, October 9th. First Year Girls from schools all over Kerry participated in the day’s events.

The format for the day was a whole group one hour ‘Skills and Drills’ session with FAI coaches Robin O’Day, Noel White and JP Mullins that the girls found to be both challenging and enjoyable. All the girls from different schools developed their passing, shooting and tackling skills as well as learning how to exploit the offside rule. After the skills session the girls went back to their school teams in order to take part in games against one another. The teams were arranged into an 11 a-side league and a 7 a-side league.

After many very competitive and closely fought league games in the 11 a-side competition, Mercy Mounthawk of Tralee faced off against Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine of Kenmare, both of whom were unbeaten on their path to the final, despite the challenge of a very strong St. Brigid’s side from Killarney. In the final, Mercy Mounthawk emerged victorious on a scoreline of 2-0 against a very resilient and classy Kenmare side.

In the 7 a-side league, the girls from Castleisland C.C. and Mercy Mounthawk put in some very impressive performances throughout the day eventually losing narrowly to Coláiste na Ríochta of Listowel and St. Brigid’s of Killarney, both of whom made it into the final. In a very keenly fought contest, St. Brigid’s ran out as eventual 2-1 winners.

To cap off an enjoyable day for all, there was a penalty shootout competition, which was eventually won by Sinéad Oliver of St. Brigid’s, Killarney who, despite the best efforts of the goalkeepers, proved flawless from the penalty spot.

It is hoped that this event will run a number of times annually going forward. Any schools interested in participating in future can contact Pádraig Hartnett of the FAI School Boys and School Girls League in Kerry.

Next up for the girls will be an FAI Futsal 5 a-side competition which will take place in Killorglin next Wednesday.

After this, the Shannonside Secondary Schools Girls League will commence where the girls from schools throughout Kerry are pitted against schools from throughout West Munster and beyond.

We would like to wish them all every success going forward.
