Certified Irish Angus Beef Competition

In 2021, three of our Transition Year students entered the Irish Angus Beef competition & successfully progressed to stage four. This exciting competition, which is run by the certified Irish Angus Beef Producer Group along with their partners ABP Ireland and Kepak Group, challenges students to rear five Irish Angus calves over 18 months while completing a research project. The initiative aims to promote the Certified Irish Angus brand while educating students about the care and attention required to produce quality beef for consumers.

Each group also benefits from the proceeds raised through the sale of the animals at the end of the competition. The overall winners also receive a bursary towards further education.

The students reached the finals that took place in 2023, with sixth year student, Abbie Daly, getting shortlisted for an outstanding achievement award.

2023 also saw two transition year students, Ciara O'Donoghue and Isabel Waters, compete in the same competition. The students reached stage three, showcasing their innovative ideas to a nationwide audience at an exhibition in Croke Park.

Chick

The Ag Science department welcomed a new member this year, the school's first little chick. Students incubated eggs over the Easter holidays and on return to school, there was success in the hatching process. Students had the fantastic opportunity to learn about the rearing poultry and looking after new life. It was fantastic to see how one little chick brought such excitement and joy to the school community
